Autumn "Mantel" Before and After

The house we are currently renting has a huge wall where the fireplace is.  It took me a while to figure out exactly what I wanted to do with it.  Here is the before picture:
You can see the twins next to it :) And how massive it really is!

Since I'm on a tight budget, I decided to make a shelf for the mantel.  I bought to wooden brackets and a piece of wood at Home Depot.  They cut the wood down to size for free.  I then rounded out the edges of the board with my sander and then I primed, painted and distressed.  Here's how it turned out.

I added a few items I already had on hand.  The large frame was purchased at a thrift store for .25 cents and then painted white.  The dark wood frame was purchased at a yard sale for .50 cents.  The other items were found around the house.

I love the mixtures of colors and shapes.

And I love the little Autumn details.

Happy Autumn!

  2. I love using open frames on my mantle. Yours look beautiful, and I love the addition of the wreaths. I plan on changing my summer mantel out this weekend. Thanks for the inspiration.
